Position Summary: |
The NYBG Mertz Library seeks a curious and detail-oriented Circulation Intern to assist with a variety of tasks related to library operations, including shelving, special projects, and patron assistance. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a specialized botanical library, work alongside experienced librarians and staff, and contribute to the preservation and dissemination of botanical knowledge. The Library Circulation Intern assists with day-to-day tasks related to public services in a botanical library setting. With focus on reference, circulation, and collection maintenance, will gain hands-on experience assisting a diverse user group that includes outside researchers, NYBG staff members, students, garden members, and members of the public. |
Specific Duties & Responsibilities: |
- Assist with circulation functions using the Integrated Library System (ILS) Sierra, including checking materials in and out, issuing library cards and barcoding materials.
- Assist with shelving and maintaining the library collections, including books, journals, and other materials.
- Provide assistance to patrons, including answering basic questions, retrieving materials, and promoting library services.
- Support special projects related to library operations, such as inventory management, data entry, and resource guides.
- Contribute to planning and execution of library programming.
- Help to maintain the physical space of the library, including organizing and maintaining supplies and equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) and customer service skills.
- An interest in libraries, museums or research techniques.
- Interest in botany, horticulture, or related fields preferred, but not required.
