Position Summary
The Department of Psychiatry at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo is seeking a dynamic and innovative leader to join our team as the Vice Chair for Research (Associate or Full Professor). This position offers a unique opportunity to shape and advance the research mission of our department, which includes a group of dedicated researchers supported by a larger team of clinicians and educators committed to excellence in psychiatric care and education. In addition to maintaining their own research, the Vice Chair would mentor junior faculty and foster collaborative research initiatives within the department and with other behavioral and health sciences schools within the university and beyond. The Vice Chair would also work with Director of Clinical Trials and other research support staff to ensure an efficient and effective infrastructure for research that coordinates with existing research support within the medical school and the university.

  • Innovation Promotion: Encourage and facilitate research innovation, addressing critical mental health challenges through interdisciplinary approaches.
  • Partnership Development: Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with other institutions, organizations, and stakeholders to enhance research impact.
  • Collaboration: Foster collaborative research initiatives with other behavioral and health departments within the institution and beyond.
  • Research Oversight: Manage and oversee the department’s research programs, ensuring high standards of scientific rigor and innovation.
  • Grant Writing: Engage in, and lead, efforts to secure external research funding through competitive grant proposals.
  • Staff Management: Recruit, train, and supervise research staff, promoting a supportive and productive research environment.

The Vice Chair for Research should be an individual who has an established, independent research career in clinical and behavioral science and who has experience developing collaborative and multidisciplinary projects. The Vice Chair for Research should develop and maintain a broad knowledge of administrative, ethical and regulatory issues as it relates to research, with an emphasis on translational, and clinical and population relevant research.

About the Department
The Department of Psychiatry is dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of psychiatric illnesses. Our 52 full-time and 89 volunteer faculty members, provide comprehensive mental health at numerous public and private facilities, serving adults, adolescents and children. These connections foster opportunities for innovative research projects. In addition to residents and fellows, we support a doctoral internship program accredited by the American Psychological Association with two tracks; 1) Developmental Approach to Mental Illness and 2) Substance Use and Mental Illness.

Our faculty are known for their contributions to understanding family processes in psychiatric and medical disorders, alcohol and drug use, brain injury and recovery, domestic violence, medical ontology, pain management and a variety of clinical trials with adults and children. Emerging areas of research include eating disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, forensic issues, patient treatment outcomes and psychiatric genetics.

Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD, MD, or equivalent in Psychiatry, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of securing external research funding in psychiatry or behavioral sciences aligned with psychiatry.
  • Experience in managing research programs and successful mentoring of young researchers.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Commitment to fostering collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
