Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Visual Communications is a creative and strategic partner in advancing the University at Buffalo’s fundraising and alumni engagement goals. Reporting to the Executive Director of Advancement Communications and Marketing, this position plays a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of the Division of University Advancement through high-quality design across print, digital, and multimedia platforms.

This role transforms innovative ideas into compelling digital and print materials, including social media graphics, short-form video, and print collateral, while managing projects from concept through delivery. The Assistant Director takes ownership of executing design solutions, partners closely with colleagues and campus stakeholders, and contributes to a consistent, accessible, and engaging visual presence across multiple platforms that proudly represents the people within and impact of our division, while continuing to grow technical skills and creative leadership.

The successful candidate will:
  • Execute brand-aligned design solutions for print, digital, and other media.
  • Coordinate and manage multiple design projects, timelines, and production workflows.
  • Prepare files for print and digital production and oversee vendor coordination and quality control.
  • Collaborate closely with communications partners across the division and the University.
  • Manage digital assets, toolkits, and visual resources for ongoing use.
  • Provide consultative support, guidance, and training to colleagues on visual communications needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field
  • 2 years of progressively responsible experience producing visual design solutions across print, digital, and video platforms (a combination of professional, academic, or portfolio-based experience considered)
  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere
  • Solid understanding of graphic design principles, including typography, layout, color theory, visual identity systems, accessibility, and legibility
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality visual design work across multiple formats
  • Working knowledge of print production processes and preparing files for print and digital distribution
  • Foundational understanding of website design concepts, including information architecture, user interface principles, and responsive design considerations
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working successfully in a higher education or corporate communications environment
  • Experience using a web content management system (CMS)
  • Experience using a digital project management system in a team environment
Physical Demands
Driving Requirements This position does not drive a university owned vehicle
Salary Range $58,000 - $60,000
