The Opportunity

The Communications Specialist and Outreach Coordinator translates technical information into clear, engaging content across web, print, and multimedia platforms. This position is part of the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering and the Cornell Local Roads Program.

The ideal candidate is a creative, detail-oriented communications professional with the ability to translate complex technical content into clear and engaging materials across web, print, and multimedia platforms.

You will:

  • Create and manage marketing and educational materials (web, newsletters, print, video)

  • Regularly update, troubleshoot and maintain the Program’s website.

  • Develop and maintain a complex schedule of high-volume, time-sensitive materials for publication within budget.

  • Manage projects including related accounting activities.

  • Develop and manage listservs, program email, and social media and utilize Access databases.

  • Write and edit materials from a variety of authors. Represent the Program at statewide and regional meetings.

  • Travel to 6-12 workshops and events per year as Program Facilitator.

  • Make 2-4 presentations per year, typically on program services, at training events and statewide local government conferences.

This is a full-time position at 100% FTE. This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.

The department serves three integrated functions: teaching undergraduate and graduate students, researching problems in biology and the environment, and public outreach to help society implement new knowledge.

The New York State LTAP - Cornell Local Roads Program (NYSLTAP-CLRP) is one of 58 local or tribal technical assistance program (LTAP/TTAP) centers nationwide that provide transportation training and technical assistance to local and tribal highway agencies.

What We Need

  • Bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience – 2 years to 4 years.

  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license and be cleared to drive for Cornell University business operations.

  • Able to travel statewide on occasions.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, effective problem solving and strong organizational skills, excellent customer service focus and the ability to work well with others is required.

  • Manage frequent interruptions while supporting the efforts of an overall team and fostering a respectful work environment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the Adobe Creative Suite is required as well as knowledge of website management and image editing.

  • Must be able to lift 20 to 50 lbs.

  • Adapt to and make recommendations for change/improvements.

  • Ability to work quickly and effectively, while prioritizing workload.

  • Must have excellent time management skills and be adaptable to changing priorities.

  • Must be able to work well with a variety of diverse people, including but not limited to faculty, staff, elected officials and conference/workshop participants.

  • Experience with mass email marketing platforms.

  • Ability to maintain a professional atmosphere in a busy office setting.

  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • Understanding of databases and the use of queries to develop targeted marketing utilizing the extension database of the Program audience.

  • Knowledge of budgeting and project management.

  • Knowledge of the Cornell accounting system or ability to learn and utilize the system after employment.
