The Transmission Operations Department is seeking to hire a Mechanic B to support field operations that ensure the safe and reliable operation of transmission systems. In this hands-on role, employees will assist with the maintenance, construction, and repair of equipment while working in a team-oriented, safety-focused environment.

Successful candidates will be dependable, adaptable, and motivated to learn and grow within critical infrastructure operations. This position offers a defined career progression path: employees are expected to pursue advancement to the Splicer role. Advancement requires successful completion of on-the-job training, along with passing the required examination to qualify as a Splicer.

Core Responsibilities
  • Work in a manhole and at high elevations, excavations and in tunnels
  • Fabricate, install, and test pipe systems
  • Support splicing operations in the field
  • Remove and install cables as required
  • Use hand and power tools to complete assigned tasks
  • Perform standard maintenance functions, including measuring, pipe cutting, and equipment handling
  • Operate heavy machinery in support of daily operations
  • Work rotating schedules, including weekends, holidays, and overtime, as needed to meet the operational needs of the department
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills and possess basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office
  • Operate Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs) weighing 26,000 pounds or more, as required
  • Comply with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, including passing a DOT physical exam, maintaining a valid medical examiners certificate, and participating in random drug testing (including marijuana) before and during employment
Required Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED and 2 years of experience working on electrical utility systems.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Experience performing standard maintenance functions, including measuring, pipe cutting, tubing, bending, soldering, and handling cumbersome equipment
  • Experience operating heavy machinery
  • Knowledge of feeder freezing, valving, excavation and filling, and pipe inspection and repair operations
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B Upon Hire Required
  • Other: Tanker Endorsement 1 1/2 Yrs Required
  • Other: Hazmat Endorsement 1 1/2 Yrs Required
  • Other: FDNY Licenses (C.O.F.) 1 1/2 Yrs Required
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • All applicants must pass all required placement exams.
  • Ability to carry tools and materials, climb ladders and scaffolds, and enter confined spaces.
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy equipment ,i.e., steel repair barrels, hot tapping equipment, boom trucks, forklifts cabling pulling equipment.
  • Entering electrical enclosed spaces having a diameter opening of 28-32 inches.
  • Climbing a ladder having a maximum weight capacity of 300 pounds (including tools weighing approximately 20 pounds).
  • Working in an aerial device having a maximum weight capacity of 300 pounds (including tools weighing approximately 20 pounds).
  • Wearing a safety harness having a weight capacity of 350 pounds (including tools weighing approximately 20 pounds).
  • Ability to successfully pass respirator medical and fit test.
  • Working in outdoor weather conditions, in heavy traffic, in underground structures, on elevated poles accessed via aerial devices, and with exposure to ambient noise.
  • Ability to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
